The India Skills Report 2026 — the 13th edition, produced by ETS with CII, AICTE, AIU and Taggd, drawing on over 1 lakh candidates and 1,000+ employers — found India’s overall employability rose to 56.35% in 2026 from 54.81% in 2025. Good news, broadly.

Is diploma worth it on pure money? Here is the arithmetic, and this is where diploma wins clearly.

A government polytechnic in Karnataka charges roughly ₹8,000–₹15,000 per year; private polytechnics run ₹30,000–₹80,000. Admission is merit-based on SSLC marks through the DTE Karnataka admission portal, with a minimum of 35% aggregate and Science and Mathematics required. For SC, ST and backward-class families, fee reimbursement often brings the government-college cost close to zero.

Is Diploma Worth It for Your Child? A Four-Question Test

Forget what the neighbours think. Run these four questions honestly before you answer is diploma worth it for your own family.

• Does your child learn better with hands than with notes? If workshop, wiring and machines hold their attention longer than a textbook does, diploma fits their brain. If they enjoy theory and exams, PU Science may serve them better.
• Does the family need income within three years? If the honest answer is yes, three years to a salary beats six. This is a legitimate reason, not a compromise.
• Is the polytechnic accredited, with a placement record you have verified in person? Not the brochure — ask for last year’s placement list and two employer names, and call one.
• Is your child willing to add skills on top of the diploma? A certification, an apprenticeship, a real internship. The 32.92% figure is largely made of students who did none of these.

That last row is the one nobody says out loud. A diploma in Computer Science sounds modern and safe. In practice, your child enters the one job market with the deepest bench of better-credentialled competition. Meanwhile a tool and die diploma faces a shortage of trained hands and a shop floor that cannot be outsourced — which is why is diploma worth it has no single answer. The branch is the answer.

The Escape Hatch Most Parents Do Not Know About

Lateral entry is why I rarely answer is diploma worth it with a flat no. A diploma is not a dead end — it is a legitimate side door into an engineering degree.

Under the AICTE-approved lateral entry scheme, diploma holders skip BTech first year and join directly in the second year (third semester), finishing the degree in three more years instead of four. Most states reserve a dedicated quota for this — typically 10–15% of each branch’s sanctioned intake. In Karnataka, entry is through DCET, conducted by KEA, requiring a pass in any diploma with 45% aggregate in the final year (40% for SC, ST and Backward Classes), with counselling handled at the KEA online counselling portal.

Two Boys, One Polytechnic, Two Very Different Endings

Two students I worked with joined the same government polytechnic in Kalaburagi in 2021, both in mechanical, both with SSLC scores in the 60s.

The first treated the diploma as the destination. He attended, passed, collected the certificate, and started applying in mid-2024. He is now a machine operator at just over ₹14,000 a month, and the work is what it was on day one.

The second treated year three as a runway. He did a six-month CNC programming certificate alongside his final semester, spent his holidays in an actual workshop instead of at home, and appeared for DCET. He took a lateral entry seat, kept a part-time drafting job through the degree, and joined an automation firm in Bengaluru in 2026 at more than double his classmate’s pay.

Same diploma, same college, same faculty, same three years. So is diploma worth it? For these two boys, the certificate was identical and the outcomes were not remotely comparable. The diploma was never the variable. What they stacked on top of it was.

When a Diploma Is Not Worth It

There are three cases where is diploma worth it gets a straight no from me, and I say so even when the family has already paid the fee.

• The institute is unaccredited or the branch is a marketing invention. If the polytechnic is not recognised by the state technical board, the certificate will not clear a government job screening or a lateral entry application. Verify recognition before you pay, not after.
• Your child genuinely wants medicine, law, research, civil services or teaching. These need a degree pathway. A diploma is a three-year detour that costs them the PU foundation they will have to rebuild anyway.
• Diploma is being chosen only to escape PU exams. Running from studying does not end at a polytechnic — six semesters, practical records and a workshop viva are waiting. A student avoiding effort will avoid it there too.

Can a diploma holder get a government job?

Will AI make diploma jobs disappear?
